The history of Value Tech Insulation began with a surprising twist on a favor delivered to a friend. People usually own a business built upon family traditions or a history of work in a related field. Greg and Waithera Watson began Value Tech Insulation in an attempt to support a friend who wanted to break away from his parent company. The friend ran the insulation division of that other company, with many years experience in the industry. Their initial intention was to take a more supportive "back office" role, with their partner managing the field operations. They never imagined their friend would take off, leaving them with a company to run. However, because of their commitment to their employees and customers, their significant investment in equipment and trucks, and their dedication to hard work and customer satisfaction, they decided to stay the course and press forward.
Greg and Waithera initially moved to the Atlanta area in pursuit of other dreams. When Waithera is not maintaining the company books for Value Tech, she is a financial analyst for an NGO affiliated with the School of Public Health at Emory University. Waithera is especially proud to be part of this non-profit organization, as they are dedicated to fighting diseases and working for the survival and development of children in Third World countries. Simultaneously, as a volunteer, Waithera also leads a diaspora group dedicated to the education of children in Kenya -- her native land prior to becoming a U.S. Citizen.
Greg imagined that most of his time in Atlanta would be in service to community development and the completion of his book on citizenship education. The book is essentially an expansion of his doctoral dissertation at Harvard University. Greg's background includes teaching, science, computers, and educational research. While working on his doctorate he taught Developmental Psychology in the graduate program for teachers at the University of Massachusetts. He also set up a family literacy program in Massachusetts, and taught eighth grade science. Greg's background in physics and computers (having owned a small computer company for 7 years) prepared him for the technical challenges of understanding the electronic equipment and the chemical science in applying spray-applied polyurethane foam. Greg says, "SPF foam is both a science and an art. No matter how good the science, without the skill and coordination of our highly-trained technicians who spray the foam, anything can happen in the field."

Waithera with Dr. Wangari Maathai, Nobel Laureate from Waithera's native Kenya. Dr. Maathai became the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for “her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace.” She is also a member of Kenya's Parliament.
